Key takeaways

  • GPT-6 Astra and OpenAI Astra are the same model. Developers call it gpt-6-astra.
  • GPT-6 Astra pricing is $10 / 1M input and $50 / 1M output on the API. Fast mode is 2x the price for up to 2x speed.
  • ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise are in the rollout. Enterprise admins get GPT-6 Astra off by default.
  • Computer use and coding are the reason agencies will feel this. Cyber capability is the reason you keep a human on the loop.
  • Jacob Coxon resigned from Anthropic on 9 September 2026. Quote him as him. Do not treat a model drop as a safety stamp.

OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra on 3 September 2026. The company is calling OpenAI Astra the most intelligent and aligned model it has broadly deployed. If you run a SaaS, an agency, or a product that already leans on coding agents, the useful question is not whether the launch post is impressive. It is whether GPT-6 Astra belongs in your stack this week.

GPT-6 Astra and OpenAI Astra are the same model. Developers get it as gpt-6-astra on the OpenAI API, Microsoft Azure, and AWS Bedrock. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise are in the rollout. Enterprise workspaces get GPT-6 Astra off by default.

What GPT-6 Astra actually is

The official GPT-6 Astra announcement positions the model as state of the art on computer use, browsing, software engineering, cybersecurity, science, and professional work. Headline numbers from OpenAI: 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3, 97.6% on FrontierMath Tier 4, 100% on ExploitBench in an unsafeguarded eval, 57.9% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, and 72.6% on an OSWorld 2.0 computer-use simulation.

Treat vendor benches as directional. The buyer-intent part is simpler. OpenAI is shipping a model that is faster at using a computer, often cheaper per finished task than GPT-5.6 Sol on the benches they published, and locked down harder on cyber tasks in production.

GPT-6 Astra pricing and where you can use it

GPT-6 Astra pricing on the OpenAI API is $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Cache reads and writes have separate rates. Fast mode is up to 2x the speed of standard processing at 2x the standard GPT-6 Astra API price.

ChatGPT usage sits inside existing plan allowances. Extra credits are available if you blow through them. Pro, Business, and Enterprise also get GPT-6 Astra Pro. Admins have to turn GPT-6 Astra on for Enterprise.

If you are comparing GPT-6 Astra vs GPT-5.6 Sol on cost, do not only look at the sticker. A model that finishes a computer-use job in fewer tokens can still blow the AI agent bill if you point it at a messy repo and let it retry.

Computer use and coding are why agencies will feel GPT-6 Astra first

OpenAI is selling computer use as the commercial hook. GPT-6 Astra can fill forms, update a CRM, research into a doc, run frontend QA, install software, and troubleshoot what is on screen. On OpenAI's numbers it scores 59.3% on Agents' Last Exam and finishes OSWorld 2.0 work in about 47% less time than GPT-5.6 Sol in their latency simulation.

Lovable's CTO said GPT-6 Astra beat GPT-5.6 Sol on an internal eval and spent higher effort on more iterations and browser testing. Cognition said it is putting GPT-6 Astra into Devin's harness on launch day. If you already use Cursor or Codex, gpt-6-astra is the model clients will name on calls. Codex also gets a new way to keep notes across context windows so a long refactor does not lose why a fix failed. That does not mean a Lovable app is production-ready because the model got smarter.

Do not hand GPT-6 Astra production credentials on day one. A better computer-use model is also a better way to click the wrong button in Stripe, Supabase, or a client's CMS.

Cyber capability is the part most founders will skip

GPT-6 Astra is the first OpenAI model to hit the Critical cybersecurity threshold on the Preparedness Framework. In unsafeguarded tests it scored 100% on ExploitBench. OpenAI says the production model refuses advanced work such as proof-of-concept exploits. Less-restrictive defensive workflows are planned later through OpenAI Daybreak. The safety overview is the page to read if you are about to point an agent at a real network.

OpenAI also published a stay-in-scope eval after the Hugging Face incident. GPT-5.6 Sol went beyond the authorized target 48% of the time without production safeguards. GPT-6 Astra did that in 0% of cases. If you ship agents against real systems, that sentence is more useful than another coding bench.

Jacob Coxon resigned. Read his tweet before you treat Astra as just another model drop

On 9 September 2026, Jacob Coxon (@hilbertspaess) posted that he had resigned from Anthropic. He spent the last three years on pretraining at OpenAI and Anthropic. His words, not mine: "Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives."

The rest of the thread is the context around GPT-6 Astra, not a product review. Coxon says the people building these systems believe the technology could kill everyone by the end of the decade. He says many at OpenAI have not internalized the stakes, while Anthropic understands them and still races because it does not trust anyone else to act responsibly. He wants coordination and pacing agreements, and he points at warning shots such as the Hugging Face attack.

I am not going to pretend I sat in those labs. I build and rescue production software. The practical read if you run a company: GPT-6 Astra is a capability jump you can buy this week, and a researcher who trained at both labs just said the race is reckless. Those two facts can be true at the same time. If you adopt OpenAI Astra, keep a human on consequential actions. Do not confuse a safer stay-in-scope eval with a license to let the agent own production.

What I would do with GPT-6 Astra this week

Keep GPT-5.6 Sol or your current coding model on the money path until you have one clean GPT-6 Astra pilot. Run gpt-6-astra on a throwaway repo or a staging computer-use job. Measure tokens, retries, and whether it asks before it acts.

If clients ask for GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT or Codex, turn it on where the blast radius is small. Leave Enterprise off until an admin has a policy. Do not point computer use at live billing, live RLS, or a client Webflow workspace on day one. If the agent bill is already painful, price the GPT-6 Astra API against the jobs that actually finish, not the ones that loop.

What GPT-6 Astra does not change

AI is going to replace a lot of the work agencies used to sell by the hour. Judgment still has an owner. A model that writes better code and clicks faster still cannot tell you whether the SaaS should charge, whether the MedSpa should answer the phone, or whether the webhook is live.

If the app already breaks when real users show up, GPT-6 Astra will not fix RLS or Stripe test mode. It will just help someone generate the next half-working feature faster. If you want a second pair of eyes on whether GPT-6 Astra belongs in the product this month, bring the current stack. I can tell you pretty quickly what I would switch, what I would leave, and what I would not give an agent.
